A Christian Japanese woman and her daughter prayed about how to resist the pressure to join in idolatrous rites at their family’s New Year celebrations. Their prayers were answered when the in-laws showed sensitivity to their feelings and didn’t press them to conform. When the husband knelt at the family altar, his wife and daughter sat behind him to show loyalty, but didn’t participate.
