Pray for Xinjiang!

On July 5 massive ethnic violence suddenly erupted on the streets of Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang province in northwest China. Hundreds of Uygur demonstrators took to the streets in the city’s central plaza, People’s Square. What reportedly began peacefully ended with an explosion of anger in which random Chinese were clubbed and stoned to death. The police moved in but failed to quell the growing violence. Two days later a mob of more than 10,000 Han Chinese chanting: “Kill all Uygurs!” and armed with hammers, axes and baseball bats surged through the streets to attack Uygurs in revenge.

Today there is a thriving church in Urumqi. The central church has more than 3,000 people worshiping every Sunday, and there are 17 daughter churches in the city catering for a Christian population of some 20,000. • Prayer Points GCM Sep 09

    1. Since 2006 a radio program “Never Mediocre” has attracted a huge response from rural migrant workers in China (FEBC, June 2009). Pray that many will come to know Christ as their Savior.

    2. Pray for the children of overseas Christians working in China, both those being educated locally and those overseas in boarding schools. May they know the reality of the love of God.
