From the deck of the S.S. Lane Victory, John Broger let the sights and sounds of Shanghai flood over him as the ship sailed up the Huangpu River. It was April 17, 1946, and he was a man on a mission. Only eight months earlier, Japan had surrendered. Shanghai was coming back to life.
