Mission Mentor

Responsible to: Area Coordinator

Relates closely with: other local volunteer team members, regional director, other area coordinators in region.

Purpose: To mobilize people toward the advancement of a church movement in East Asia by mentoring them in one or more OMF’s six practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Model a consistent witness for Christ, praying regularly for OMF’s ministry, other team members, mentoring opportunities, and people you are serving.
  • Educate your mentees about the urgent needs of the people and the state of the church in East Asia.
  • Meet with up to 5 mentees monthly or bi-montly to 1) demonstrate interest in their lives and spiritual development, 2) encourage them to purposefully seek their role in God’s plan for the nations and 3) direct them to take appropriate next steps.
  • Follow-up on mentoring leads provided by OMF follow-up coordinator or area coordinator (approximately 10-15 leads per year).
  • Connect mentees with OMF people and resources as appropriate.
  • Meet regularly with area coordinator for mentoring and ministry results (approximately once a month—most meetings will be by phone).
  • Participate in volunteer team meetings (approximately once a quarter).
  • Keep current on OMF’s ministry (OMF website, volunteer intranet, materials etc.)

Options:

  • Serve at OMF sponsored events in your area to develop new mentoring relationships.
  • Attend missions events in your area with one or more mentees.

Time commitment: Approximately 2-4 hours a week. (some weeks may be busier than others).

Length of commitment: One year renewable by mutual agreement
Training:

  • Completion of OMF volunteer initial training course.
  • Informal training conducted by direct supervisor. Additional training also offered through the OMF Intranet and during quarterly volunteer meetings.
  • Lotus Notes/mobilization database training.

Special qualifications:

  • Communication skills (listening, asking appropriate questions).
  • Counseling/shepherding/mentoring skills.
  • Former experience in a discipleship role (small group leader, mentor etc.).
  • Self-motivated and disciplined to arrange regular meetings with mentees.
