Not all personnel serving with US in the United States are supported missionaries (and some who are home staff missionaries have less support than needed).

  • Approximately one third of our home staff are employees who receive no designated donations, or very little support, toward their salaries.
  • OMF U.S. home staff members are highly qualified in their professional fields. The salaries they receive are generally well under that which might be expected in a commercial setting. Staff members choose to steward their time and talents by working for less.
  • Some donors are not aware that expenses of paid home staff are not covered by endowments or reserves. Some assume that home staff are adequately supplied through general fund or high assessments on missionary income.
  • Health insurance and other staff-related expenses are increasing.

Donors who understand that staffing represents a significant portion of OMF U.S. expense also know that giving to “Home Staff Support” frees funding for ministry, missionary care, infrastructure and other needs.

“Home Staff Support” donations also means that additional amounts may be directed toward staff retirement, modest annual raises, special training, hiring of new workers and other categories of staff-related expenses.

In the words of one overseas missionary member, “It is a great comfort to know that OMF colleagues back home are providing the backbone for our front line work. My donors are receiving my prayer letters, someone is thinking about my retirement needs, medical and tax issues are being taken care of, and new missionaries are being mobilized for my team. I’m able to focus on the work God called me to East Asia to do.”

Some time ago OMF U.S. prioritized the need for support for both missionaries and employees by commissioning a special task force to study and provide answers to home staff support issues.
