Serving Those Who Have Served

Builders of a living heritage, OMF missionaries who have given lifetimes of active service in East Asia are “reassigned” to ministry here at home when they reach retirement age.

Many see support drop after retirement. Returning to the United States, most do not own a home. Years of savings are often modest. OMF is committed to caring for our reassignees when they are no longer actively serving others or providing for themselves.

Challenges of Today and Tomorrow

Currently OMF retiree subsistence comes from three main sources. The primary source is donations from retiree supporting churches and donors. Another is legacy gifts to OMF from estates and other sources, and the third is special internal grants. If not needed for retiree support, internal grants and legacy gifts could be used instead for needs such as evangelism, church planting, and leadership development. Over the next several years we expect the number of retirees to rise sharply. Per capita retiree costs will also grow (particularly the cost of health care), even as we try to limit and cut costs. We continue to pray and plan, trusting God for our provision.

OMF has now instituted a tax-qualified 403b retirement plan for active workers. But those savings will not help current reassignees, nor will older currently-active missionaries be able to save enough in their 403b accounts before they retire.

Why The Lammermuir Fund?

The dignity of our reassignees merits the appreciation of others. The Lammermuir Fund was established in the mid 1990s by a leading Christian foundation and by the matching contributions of individual donors. During a time of relative economic prosperity, the fund was intended to help defray the growing costs of reassignee care.

Providentially, during more recent economic times the fund has become an increasingly important source of God’s supply. Individual donors continue to sustain The Lammermuir Fund today to His glory and as a tribute to those whose lives are given in His service.
