Doug and Haunani Whittet

Missionaries to Japan

Doug and Haunani Whittet have experienced God's work in their lives through the years. As a teenager, Doug began to sense God's call to missionary service through the reading of missionary biographies and the influence of his pastor. It was during Haunani's time at seminary that God brought her to an understanding of the lordship of Christ. This enabled her to give up her personal pursuits in order to follow God's plan for her life. Through many conversations with missionaries and their experience in Japan on a summer program, God confirmed His call for the Whittets to serve as missionaries in Japan.

Haunani has a BA in math from the University of California at Irvine, a BS in nursing from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and a certificate in Bible from Multnomah Bible College and Biblical Seminary. Doug has a BA in math (teaching) and a teaching credential from UCLA. He also received a certificate in Bible from Multnomah and an MA in biblical and theological studies from Talbot Seminary (Biola).

Doug and Haunani have been serving as missionaries in Japan since 1988. During their first term they did two years of full-time language study, oversaw two summer programs, and served in an established Japanese church.

During their second term, they were church planters in Urayasu City, a suburb of Tokyo. As part of a missionary team, they were involved with evangelism, discipleship and pastoring a group of about forty believers at Urayasu International Christ Church (UICC).

For their third term, Doug, Haunani and their son, John, returned to UICC and led the missionary team in the church-planting work. Their goal is the establishment of a maturing body of believers who are able to share their faith and lead others to Christ. At the Lord's appointed time, the missionary team would like to turn the church over to Japanese leadership.
