Arlene Sorenson
Missionary to Thailand
Arlene was born and raised in a Christian home in Washington State. She trusted Christ as her Savior at age five and sensed God’s call to be a missionary as a young girl. She took her Bible training at Prairie Bible College (in Alberta, Canada). After graduating in 1975, she served on staff there before going Thailand with OMF International in 1987.
By God’s grace Arlene has been involved in the following ministries in Thailand:
- Church planting in Central Thailand: Along with a team of missionaries, she started a church in a small town. The town is famous for its shrine to honor Buddha and is called Buddha’s Footprint.
- Teaching conversational English in an English teaching center in Bangkok.
- Teaching Bible studies to students and developing some English evangelistic literature—Friendship Newsletter.
- Serving as the manager of the Bangkok OMF mission home for two years.
- Encouraging young Christians in a new Thai church in Bangkok.
Arlene plans to return to Thailand in July 2006. She expects to be involved in church planting and English teaching ministry for the next three years. She longs to be able to share Christ with Thai people and see lives changed by the power of God.
Thailand is the most Buddhist country in the world (94% of the population). The Thai Buddhist world view has no concept of God as a supreme being. The Thai have remained “politely resistant” to the gospel, even after nearly 180 years of Protestant missionary work. Still less than one percent of Thailand's population are committed Christians.
Please pray for:
- Continued freedom to share Christ in Thailand.
- Thai people to be convicted of their need for God, that the gospel will be clearly shared with them, and that many would commit their lives to Christ.
- The Thai church to be purified and enabled to effectively share their testimony.
- For daily strength and discernment from the Lord for Arlene, that she will daily “walk in the Spirit” so God’s work will be done through her as He leads her to spiritually hungry hearts.
- Daily enabling, discernment and strength for Arlene—physical, emotional, mental and especially spiritual.
