Kids Club
The last two days have been dominated by kids.
This opening sentence was laboriously constructed by exhausted Mark who has now been relieved by Jen!
On 25th and 26th July we ran a kid's club in the area near the Izumi Park Town church. We had a great response to publicity, ane the club was really well attended, with around 30 elementary school children coming both days. It was a wonderful opportunity to expose non-Christian kids and their families to the gospel, and to help the church develop contacts in the local community.
We taught a few English phrases, an English Christian song (very, very simple!) and a memory verse from the talk - Is 44:24 - 'I am the LORD, who has made all things'. We were advised to keep things moving quickly - they are a lively bunch, and keeping their attention held in a hot classroom when you don't speak Japanese was quite a challenge!
Aside from the four inch long flying cockroach that one of the five year olds smuggled in inside a box (which he proffered to guileless English leaders asking sweetly, "What is this?", before falling back in hysterics at the response - "It's a bo...aaghhh!") the kids were all good-natured, well-behaved and seemed to engage on some level with what they were taught. Having been finally converted ten years after first hearing the gospel at a church holiday club I (Jen) was sent to by my non-Christian parents, I've been reminded that we don't look for immediate, visible results when teaching God's word, but we trust Jesus' promise of a bumper harvest - we heard a great talk on Mark 4 in one of our devotional sessions in which this point was made. So we're praying that one day some of the children we've met at these clubs would one day become Christian, even if we don't know until the last day!
