On-Campus Outreach
Jonathan Tam - Sunday 20 July 2008
Though the Living Word Student Centre is a hotspot for many students, there are still quite a number that are unaware of it and are also unreached. While the leaders are trying to get accreditation for the society so it will be recognised by the university, the three of us will be giving lessons, seminars and lectures at the university to bring more students to the centre, befriend unreached students and share the gospel with them or simply be a good witness to Christ by serving others on campus.
We have all been teaching English to some Vietnamese exchange students who have also been extremely friendly having us hang out at their residence in the alumni building and going out with meals for them where we all teach each other Vietnamese, Cantonese and Tagalog intermittently. It’s a great opportunity which we have been subtly taking an advantage of by explaining that we are “Christians” and “missionaries” and leaving our Bibles on the table for easy access. On a session about pronouncing “sh”, John used John 10 on Jesus as the perfect shepherd “who lays down his life for his sheep” and His people as the flock to describe and explain what “sheep” are. Another Vietnamese student asked what the three of us were doing there. After Marisol explained that missionaries teach about Jesus, the student asked “Why don’t you teach us then?” Another student replied, “Because we wouldn’t understand…” In a fit of boldness surely inspired by the Holy Spirit she drew 2 ways to live on a sheet of paper. They had more questions which they couldn’t really express so Jonathan and Marisol printed out the Gospel of Mark in Vietnamese (courtesy of good ol’ trustworthy biblegateway). Let us keep these students in prayer as for many of them it is the first time they’ve ever had the gospel explained to them.
The engineering faculty has its own publication “Solipsismo” whose publishing team includes Aga. Aga and Pastor Paul organised a workshops for the publishing team about publishing and writing magazines. Marisol who was the speaker left her details with the workshop members. This led to a contact being made. After being invited to the service, the contact agreed not only to come, but to bring a friend who is his co-staff. He also said that he had been reading “A Purpose Driven life” recently and was looking for a fellowship! God works in such hidden and surprising ways, and it’s just a privilege to see how His plan unfolds, the Holy Spirit guides and the right people meet at the right time so His purpose is carried out.
At another talk on media, arts and China given by Marisol and Jonathan, someone asked Marisol why she was a missionary and she was able to give her testimony and explain how she was convicted to share the gospel to people who don’t have the amazing gift of knowing and being loved by Jesus. After the talk a few students even came up to us and said they were Christian and wanted to know how to get involved with OMF!! God has definitely been answering our prayers for opportunities and we are very thankful and continue to pray for the gospel to advance in this university.
