A sociable weekend
- Saturday 05 July 2008Predictably, a lot has happened since the last post. On Thursday, we had great fun at the Tokai English Speaking Society, making a few new contacts who we hope to see again this Tuesday. We also had dinner with Pastor Honda at Minami Church, which was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Japanese church and to be encouraged by the pastor in our evangelism with students in Tokai. Friday began with an off-the-cuff lunch organised by Alex, to which, in God's wonderful provision, around 15 or more students came! We were able to make many new friends, and Annie and Nat spent the afternoon shopping for "yukatas", traditional Japanese clothing, with Yurika.
In the evening, we joined a barbecue organised by Alaric's engineering English class, that Mark and Rob had assisted at during the afternoon. We had great fun sitting round the barbecues eating jengis khan, lamb and beef barbecued in fat in traditional Hokkaido style. It started to rain at the end of the evening, but spirits were not dampened as we frantically dashed around packing up our rubbish and sheltering inside. Today (Saturday) continues the sociable theme of the weekend with two engagements oganised by the SACLA at Hokudai - bowling, to which many of Rob's contacts will be going, and then a tanabata party in the evening - the girls will wear their new yukatas, and the boys we expect will stick out like sore thumbs! If you read this in time, please pray for opportunities for long conversations to build existing friendships and perhaps establish new ones.
Tomorrow, we will all be off at our separate churches - Tom and Annie to Minami, Rob and Nat to Oasa, and Mark to either Nishi or the Lighthouse church with Richard. Pray that we will be encouraged by and and encouragement to Japanese Christians and that we will be built up and equipped by the Word, however little we may understand of the sermons! Exciting times continue - update soon!
