Cardiff China Day - 10th February
- Wednesday 14 February 2007felt a little bad since I wasn't sure I had done enough work to pull this event off. Fortunately, the Lord intervened and things went much better than planned.
The previous day there had been a flurry of phone calls as a result of the flurry of snow that was falling in the Cardiff and Newport areas. Jenni was very uncertain whether it would be safe to drive. I was prepared to trust my 'experts on the ground', Dennis and Freda, who were sure that everything would be fine. I did feel a little sorry for Tony Lambert who had got on the train unsure whether there would be cancellations or delays.
In the event, travel was very smooth, and we (and Tony) got to the church in fine time to set up, relax and get ready for the punters. At an event like this, we never know how many will come. What a pleasant surprise we had. Nigh on 50 people came, which was a significant increase on the previous year. This number included a good section from the 21-35 year age bracket, which was tremendously exciting.
The speakers were good. Tony was his usual high quality, he has so much to say, and he did go a little over time, but he's always worth it. I was particularly impressed with the Serve Asia Worker's presentation. Sarah was excellent. Inspirational, well-spoken and some great photos. She certainly would have encouraged anyone thinking of short-term work in China (or elsewhere).
All in all, a much better day than I had hoped for. As so often happens, outcomes are pretty immeasurable, but I had a message from Tony saying that he had enjoyed a fruitful afternoon in Cardff Chinese Church. It's nIce when events that you plan have a good spin-off.
