fmZERO

I (Richard) thought of the name as I was cycling home from the Hokkaido Center one day. We wanted something that appealed to youth, didn’t sound immediately Christian, but that had some way of connecting it to OMF (which is FM0 backwards…). Also we plan to use the name as a way of teaching people the Gospel – F – free, M – muryo (ie. no fee) 0 – zero cost. The Gospel, astoundingly, comes at no cost because the price has been paid.

Student Ministry

As part of the Hokkaido strategy, we envisage new initiatives in evangelism and for strengthening work amongst 13-30s in Sapporo. We plan to focus on university students and high school-ers, although others may come to be included. Our actual vision statement is:

To raise up Gospel servants for Sapporo universities, Hokkaido churches, Japanese society, and the global community…

Hokkaido Center

We are hugely privileged to be able to use this building, and es-pecially the third floor meeting room as our base. Not being particularly near to uni-versity campuses, we hope to appeal to students living in the area, as well as utilize the fact that we are just 3 minutes from a subway station. Long-term, we hope to run regular English, music, dinner, bible study and other activities, mainly in the evenings and at weekends.

Starting in April

Actually, in the first 6-9 months we won’t be planning to have any regular meetings, just one-off events and teams, with the focus being on building up a pool of contacts, as well as getting a feel for how we can best honour God by proceeding.

Alaric

I once asked a Japanese church worker in Sapporo if he knew Alaric. Yes of course, was the reply. How do you know him, I asked. Answer: "He’s famous". Alaric will be completing his language refresher over the next few months before beginning to work with fmZERO mostly full time, though he will also have some responsibilities at the Japan Language Center (JLC).

Alex Fung

Alex is a 2-year OMF Associate who will start in April. One of the goals of fmZERO is to help people like Alex find opportunities for short-term service, and whope to see many more join us over the next few years.

Richard East

If you had asked me a year ago as to where I hoped I would be working after JLC , I would never have guessed the floor above in the same building! When this was suggested as a possible designation I initially thought I would prefesomething else; but in praying about it, it gripped me and hasn’t let go.

Please pray for Alaric to be fully prepared over the next few months, for Alex to be used and trained over these two years, and pray for Richard to be able to work in such a way that gives joy to the regional director, church workers in Sapporo, and most of all Jesus.

Your fellow worker in the (free, muryou, zero yen) Gospel,

Richard
