18. Radio Broadcasting

NK Blog - Wednesday 09 December 2009

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:1

Christian radio continues to broadcast into North Korea. One group running such radio programs is located in Seoul, South Korea. It has been transmitting programs into the North since 1956. This broadcasting helps North Korean citizens learn things about the world, God and the gospel that they cannot learn in other ways. The group broadcasts into North Chosun for two hours a day between 4 am and 6 am. Programs include verse-by-verse Bible studies, studies on the Psalms, and an early morning worship service, like the ones South Korean churches hold each morning.

Different topics are covered each day of the week from 5:30-6:00 am. Some of the topics are talks by local preachers on creation and intelligent design and the problem of cults in the South Korean church. One day they discuss the history of the church in North Korea by taking an imaginary tour of churches in North Korea, naming different cities and areas in the North and churches and pastors that used to be in those areas.

This Christian group also wants to help the North prepare for reunification, so they sometimes talk about current events in South Korea, such as the increasing suicide rate, to show that South Korea has problems too. At 7:10 am they broadcast 10 minutes of news directed to Koreans in North Korea, China and Russia. As the South Korea national broadcasting system already provides a news program directed to North Koreans 24 hours a day, the Christian station does not need to do much news. (34)

  • Praise God that Christian radio can help North Koreans learn about the world, and also about God and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • Pray that many in the North will hear these programs; and that the Christians will be encouraged not to give up but persevere until there is freedom for the gospel again in North Korea.
  • Pray that non-believers will hear the Christian programming, seek God and find him through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
