2. A Day in the Life of an NK Family

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2:14

The North Korean family awake and go about their daily activities. The son goes to his school and learns of something he has never heard of before: the “internet.” The little daughter goes to her kindergarten and learns that the love of the Great Leader, Kim Il-Sung, helps the flowers grow.

Even working in the factory, the mother hears patriotic music playing throughout the day. The family is continuously surrounded by pictures and statues of President Kim Il-Sung and Chairman Kim Jong-Il — at work, at school, and all around the city. In the evening the grandfather tells stories from the War — that is, the Korean War that was fought from 1950-53. The world this family knows is the world the North Korean government presents to them. In many ways it resembles Maoist China of the 1970s.

  • Praise God that he is sovereign over all people, including those on the Korean peninsula.
  • Pray that many in North Korea will seek greater meaning to life than they are taught.
  • Pray that people preparing to minister to North Koreans will seek first to understand the people and the values by which they are taught to live.
