1. The Great Revival of 1907

- Tuesday 19 December 2006

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

2 Chronicles 7:14

In 1907 there was great revival across Korea. The gospel had made small inroads during the 1800s but the first Protestant missionaries entered Korea in 1884. In 1907 the Holy Spirit cleansed and sanctified the church in a powerful way.

Beginning in 1903 when a few Koreans came to repentance, slowly more and more turned to Christ. In January of 1907 a Presbyterian and Methodist Bible conference was held in Pyongyang. A missionary preached on 1 Corinthians 12 and said “hate in a brother’s heart injures not only the whole church, but brings pain to Christ, the church’s Head. Many Koreans realized anew what sin was and confessed sin against other believers.

The meetings were full from then on and God’s presence could be felt. People started praying, crying and confessing sin. One missionary who was there testified, “Every man forgot every other. Each was face to face with God . . . The scorn of men . . . was of small consequence if only God forgave.”8 The Holy Spirit was moving in a mighty way. This spread to other parts of the country as men who had attended the meetings in Pyongyang traveled around the country.

People confessed and repented of sin and made things right. If they had stolen money, they repaid it. It was not just an emotional event; the Lord moved people to make peace with others. The church was raised to a deeper spiritual and moral level, and many were called to the ministry.

One hundred years later in 2007, we pray that the Lord may again do a powerful work in North Korea.

Pray

  • Praise God for the mighty revival and work of repentance He did in northern Korea in 1907.
  • Pray that God again would do a powerful work of convicting people of sin and bringing people to repentance in Christ in North Korea in 2007.
  • Pray that God will prepare the people of South Korea so they will be spiritually ready for great changes in North Korea in 2007.
