Mission is the heartbeat of God (Gen. 3)

Introduction

Genesis 3 is a very familiar passage to most of us. At the beginning of the passage Adam and Eve are living in perfect harmony with God, each other and the created world God has placed them in. By the end they are banished from the garden and left to toil and suffer. What happened? How did they anger God? Why did he punish them in this way? Is this just a fairy story or can it help us to understand God, human nature, and mission in the twenty-first century? We are have prepared this study to be read and discussed in five sections.

Temptation Genesis 3:1-5

(1) What strategies does Satan use to tempt Eve? (2) What mistakes does Eve make? (Compare also Gen 2:15-17) (3) How does Satan tempt us today? What can we learn from Eve`s mistakes to help us resist that temptation?

Disobedience Genesis 3:6-7

(4) What sins does Eve commit? (5) At what point in verses 1-7 does sin enter the world? (6) How can this encourage us in our fight against sin?

Where are you? Genesis 3:8-13

(7) Why is God`s question in verse 9 so amazing? (8) What does it teach us about the character of God? (9) What do verses 10-13 teach us about the nature of Adam and Eve? (10) In what ways do you see these characteristics in the world around us today? Be specific!

Judgement Genesis 3:14-19

(11) Sum up, in one or two words, the judgements God pronounces for the serpent, for Eve and for Adam. (12) What one glimmer of hope is there in all this? (13) Are these judgements still relevant for the twenty-first century? How are they relevant? (14) What does this teach us about human nature today?

Salvation Genesis 3:20-24

(15) What do we learn about God`s character from these last verses? (16)(a)The chapter finishes rather mournfully with a `flashing sword` guarding the way to the `tree of life`. Is this the end of the story? (b) Read also Revelation 22:1-5 and 12-1. Who now has access to the tree of life? And on what basis? (17) What are the implications of these words: (a) - for us as individuals? (b) - for the church? (and more specifically your church) (c) - for those who have never heard of the love of God?

Conclusion Mission is the heartbeat of God

(18) As a group, sum up what you have learnt from this passage about the character of God, and of human nature. Are there parallels or contrasts between the two? (19) Finally, have you learned anything about mission from this passage?
