English Teaching Partners

The program is primarily a mobilization strategy designed to share the vision God has given OMF Taiwan. Our goal is to stretch Partners' vision for mission and to motivate them to pray, support and /or come to Taiwan as long-term missionaries.

Why?

1. To give missions minded university graduates an opportunity to:

  • Gain cross-cultural and missions experience.
  • Begin learning Mandarin Chinese or Taiwanese Hokkien.
  • Pay off student loans and/or save money for further studies.

2. To be used by God to reach Taiwanese people with the gospel.

What?

1. Teaching English: Partners teach at one of the many private English cram schools. The school arranges for their work permit and insurance. OMF in Taiwan will introduce Partners to a school where we are able, but the responsibility for finding a job rests with the Partner. Typically Partners work from 15-32 hours/week, depending on their financial, language learning, and ministry goals. (Most schools pay US$16+/hour.)

2. Language Learning: All Partners are expected to do some language study in Taiwanese or Mandarin.

3. Ministry: OMF will help Partners to be involved in evangelistic ministry. e.g. an English Bible study with university students; children’s ministry; reaching out to grassroots people with a Taiwanese coworker. Ministry opportunities vary depending on the needs of OMF missionaries and local churches, Chinese language ability (or not!), gifts and talents.

In addition, there will be opportunities to share about God with the children at school. There are many natural opportunities to do this during story times and at major Christian holidays. There is more freedom to do this in Taiwan than in many Western countries!

4. Pastoral Care & Training: OMF will provide a weekly meeting for worship, Bible study, sharing, and prayer. There will also be vision trips, weekend retreats and the annual OMF retreat which are times to be challenged, taught and encouraged. The Partners Coordinator is available for advice and care as needed.

Where?

The English Teaching Partners are based in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.

Who?

Committed Christians with a desire to serve God and the following qualifications:

  1. Be 22-30 years old.
  2. Have a bachelors degree from an "approved" school. The Taiwan government has a list of schools that are considered acceptable in order to teach English. The kind of degree you have does not matter. We can tell you if your school is "approved" or not.
  3. Have a passport from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, or the United States. (This is a government requirement to teach in Taiwan)
  4. Willingness to come for at least a year. All language schools ask teachers to sign a minimum one-year contract.

How?

OMF Partners are not OMF members. Financially, they are self-supported and independent of OMF. If you work hard, you will be able to save money and/or pay off student loans, etc. We will help you find a job and a place to stay. More important, we will link you up with other OMF-related teachers for fellowship and ministry. We will also be available for advice/mentoring.

This really is a great opportunity get valuable cross-cultural experience, learn Chinese, make new friends, and serve the Lord!
