The United States has been known as the "melting pot of the world." In the 19th and 20th centuries this mainly referred to the influx of European immigrants. Today, however, it alludes to a vast diversity of nationalities traveling to and settling in North America.
On average, 22 million internationals visit the U.S. each year. The presence of internationals in our communities is a golden opportunity to share the gospel and show the love of Christ. Someone from an "unreached" people group may live next door!
Living as a foreigner is often a difficult experience. Loneliness, culture shock and homesickness all can take a toll. Sadly, 80 percent of international students who come to America will never enter an American home (much less a Christian one). Show the love of Christ by welcoming these who are dearly loved by God.
- Start an international student Bible study.
- Go to international holiday events to meet internationals (ie Chinese New Year, Japanese Spring Festival, Oktoberfest, etc.)
- Partner with organizations like International Students Inc. (ISI) or International Student Connection (ISC) whose ministries focus on international students.
- Adopt an international friendship partner.
- Offer English classes for internationals through your church.
- Offer rides to the grocery store for internationals.
- Host an "Around Town" event for internationals who are new to your area. Taken them on a tour of different points of interest around your city or area.
