Serve Asia Debrief: Upon return to Canada

Particulars: This trip is for students who would like to experience life on a university campus in South East Asia. The main part of your time will be spent living in a university hall of residence.

Setting: In many regions of South East Asia there is still great resistance to the message of Jesus Christ. We believe that prayer works miracles – including the miracle of God's word reaching into the darkest of spiritual environments. We need people who are committed to praying for the nations of South East Asia from their homes and churches right here in Canada. We also need people who are willing to take a step of faith, go overseas and pray on-site with insight in the midst of what God is doing while developing friendships with people in the local community. You will engage in friendship ministry and share unique and life-lasting experiences – and you will return to Canada a changed person.

Mission: Daytimes will be used for orientation, getting to know the situation in our work, visiting interesting tourist sites in town, sharing and praying together and helping to prepare some special evenings for the students. These evenings can be used very creatively. Whatever your gifts and interests are you can use them: drama, music, dance, sports, etc. But it is also possible to facilitate activities such as balloon debates, exchanging information about your respective cultures and sharing views on current issues. You will also have time to just hang out with the students and experience what life is like for them. In addition, you will have the chance to go to a village for a couple of nights, live with a local family and explore a life style that is very different to hectic city life. While you do all of this, the people who you come in contact with might want to explore what is different in your life!

Method: You will depart from Canada directly following your Serve Asia Training and fly to Asia. You will spend time in orientation to language and culture with the rest of your team. Opportunities may include teaching English informally, leading Bible studies and befriending local students as fitting in the ministry strategy of the receiving missionary.

Debrief: The Serve Asia Debriefing will explore your personal experience in South East Asia as well as give you the opportunity to share with others who have returned from similar encounters during their time with Serve Asia. You will receive helpful material to guide you through the reentry process. Hopefully, all this is just the beginning to the adventures God has for you in years to come.

Estimated Cost: $3500CAD; this cost covers international airfare from Canada to Asia, international visas, on-field travel expenses, accommodation and living allowance while in Asia, plus the Serve Asia training, orientation and debriefing. Immunizations, domestic travel to and from the training in Canada and any other costs should be covered by the Serve Asia worker personally. The cost quoted is estimated and may change due to flight prices at the time of your mission trip.

Requirements: Must be 18 – 25 years old. Complete all the Serve Asia Application prerequisites. Meet the financial commitments of the programme prior to departure. Attend and fulfill the requirements of Serve Asia Training and Debrief as part of this experience. Flexibility in the context of cross-cultural situations is required. Must be a team-player.
