Needed: 8 Serve Asia Workers
Mission Length: To be determined (2009)
Serve Asia Training: TBA
Serve Asia Debriefing: Upon return to Canada

Particulars: To gain an understanding of rural Taiwanese worldview and compare it with your own worldview. Through interactive discussion, we will begin to develop culturally relevant strategies for evangelism, training and church planting.

Setting: Team members will live in a rural Taiwanese Village south west Taiwan near Chiayi county. Each day, they will be out interacting with and observing Taiwanese people to discover key elements of rural Taiwanese worldview and how to present the Gospel in a culturally relevant way. Finally, the team will be required to present its findings at a 1 hour session at the OMF annual conference (Oct 4-8th)

Method: Each morning, there will be a whole team debrief of the previous day's activities, followed by a short lecture. Then team members will be sent in groups of 2 to complete various tasks and observations among the rural people during the rest of the day. Tasks will include such things as observing at a temple, doing simple surveys, interviewing a traditional religion practitioner on the street (with translation if needed), sharing a simple written or oral gospel with individuals and understanding their response. There will also be required readings that will be discussed during the lecture time.

In the evening the team members will eat dinner and stay overnight with a family that practices traditional Taiwanese religion to gain even better understanding of rural Taiwanese life.

Each morning, at the debriefing session, the whole group will discuss its findings. A missionary will help lead the group to understand what they have seen and heard and determine how Jesus can move into these people's lives.

Requirements: Individuals who join this team will have to be fairly gregarious, bold and willing to make contact with individuals they meet in the village. Your success on this team will largely depend on how willing you are to initiate contact and attempt conversation with people even if you have little or no language. Luckily, the Taiwanese are very friendly people and often very willing to interact with foreigners. Your ability to record your observations and develop them into an understanding of Taiwanese worldview will be critical.

Estimated Cost: $3500CAD; this cost covers international airfare from Toronto to Taipei, international visas, on-field travel expenses, accommodation and living allowance while in Asia, plus the Serve Asia training, orientation and debriefing. Immunizations, domestic travel to and from the training in Toronto and any other costs should be covered by the Serve Asia worker personally. The cost quoted is estimated and may change due to flight prices at the time of your mission trip.
