Children smiling at the Sunshine Centre
What is the Sunshine Centre?
The Sunshine Centre aims to help children from poor family backgrounds particularly in regards to education. The children we are ministering to, previously earned some money for their families by collecting rubbish or begging at the market. Now they go to public school, get extra tuition at the Sunshine Centre, hear about Jesus, play games and are provided with two meals a day at the Centre. One of our members is the Education Advisor at the Centre, where she aims to further develop the education strategy, to raise the teaching level through informal teachers’ training and to disciple the staff while working alongside them.
Chenda and Sokcheat are learning to smile again
Chenda, six, and Socheat, ten, are brother and sister. They attend the Sunshine Centre every day.
Chenda and Socheat's mother brought them to the Phnom Penh from their village several years ago to escape their violent, alcoholic father. Chenda recalls waking up one night to find he was holding a knife to her throat. They feel safe now that they live in the city, far away from him.
Their new home is near the Sunshine Centre. Before the children started coming to the Sunshine Centre they had little to look forward to each day. They stayed at home and helped their mother with the housework.
Once the children started at the Sunshine Centre, things began to change. Now they go to school every day and are excited about the future. Chenda likes reading and writing and wants to be a dancer when she grows up, Socheat plans to be a policeman.
