Present Situation ...

Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a ranking of 130 out of 175 countries on the UN Human Development Index (2003). These bare statistics conceal enormous human suffering and need, both physical and spiritual. To see the need and possess a remedy compels love to act. Jesus saw needy people and out of his compassion he both healed and taught them.

• 34% of the population survive on less than US$1 a day
• 45% of Cambodian children under the age of 5 are malnourished (2000)
• around 1 in 8 children dies before the age of 5, each year
• life expectancy is 58.9 years (2005 estimate)
• 60% of children never complete primary school
• HIV/AIDS — adult prevalence rate: 2.6% (2003 estimate)
• Literacy Rate: definition: age 15 and over can read and write
  total population: 73.6%
  male: 84.7%
  female: 64.1% (2004)
• More than 50% of the population is 20 years or younger

Our mission is to glorify God by living a Christian life of integrity, serving with excellence and compassion, teaching and training, and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with sensitivity.

OMF Cambodia development work focuses on their main areas:

• Health
• Education
• Social concern

Our normal practice is to second workers to other suitable organizations, rather than setting up our own project and as such we value partnership with local organizations or government agencies.

Our work at present includes:

• leprosy control
• caring for women and children at risk
• teaching English at the Ministry of Public Works
• lecturing at the Universities
• literacy and English teaching in Kratie
• community development in Prey Veng
• providing medical care to prisoners
• income generating projects
