Calmette: A Church or a Hospital?

Calmette Church’ often gets muddled up with the famous ‘Calmette hospital’. The Church name was chosen based on the part of town, located in the north of Phnom Penh.

One day, while visiting a patient in the ‘Calmette Hospital’, a missionary was asked: “How many local doctors and nurses are there in your church?” The missionary laughed and replied: “Well, there aren’t any yet, but in the future there will be some local doctors and nurses! However, we have medical missionaries from Malaysia and Japan.”

A Beginning like a Mustard Seed…

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and parch in its branches.” Matthew 13:31

This verse is a good description of church planting in Calmette, Phnom Penh. In the beginning (1998), a few teenagers came along, the group was small and it was hard to see anything. In God's time, the group grew and grew so that it became like a tree and people with no hope or purpose in their lives perched in the branches, finding abundant life in Christ. Calmette church now has 7 daughter churches in villages around Phnom Penh. The vision is to see these small seeds grow into large and useful trees for God's kingdom.

Since 2001, church members have been giving a special offering every Sunday towards their own place of worship and ministry. In 2005, through God's grace and the generosity of Christians and churches in many countries, the church was able to buy some land in the north of the city. The site has been prepared and the construction of a new church building is almost finished. One the lower floor, are 3 kindergarten rooms, an office, small meeting rooms. The second floor consists of a worship room for up to 160 people. In the future the church would like to build a further two floors, with a main worship hall that can hold 400 people.

Calmette church members are deeply touched by the partnership and support of other members of God's family around the world. In the future, the church also wants to participate in world missions by giving offerings and sending cross-cultural missionaries.

There are many children, young people, factory workers and adults who don’t know Jesus Christ in the area surrounding the new location. We pray that this building will be a tree where many will come and find shelter.

Please pray:

For the new Building

  • Praise God for His provision!

Daughter Churches and leadership

  • Pray for all the daughter church groups to be strong and healthy by God’ grace!
  • Pray for the equipping and training of the leaders.
  • Pray for God’s protection against the attacks of the evil one!
  • Pray that the many young adults in Calmette Church would find Christians as their life-partners.
