Send

Often lost in the going of missions is the sending. Missionaries do not just go overseas: God's people send them. As we so often find throughout the New Testament, the sending and going relationship is one of interdependence: the sender needs the one who goes, and the one who goes needs the sender. Intentionally send missionaries through encouragement, logistical support and financial giving (Rom. 10:15).

“And how can they preach unless they are sent?” Paul, Romans 10:15

Since the time of the Apostle Paul, missionaries haven’t just gone; they have been sent (see Rom. 10:15). They have been supported and encouraged by God’s people. Sending involves giving financially to meet the needs of the mission, but it does not mean one has to be wealthy to give. Senders pray fervently, communicate, lend cars, organize events, print and distribute prayer letters and a wide variety of other creative actions. A “goer” without senders may as well stay home. For those who can’t go, or who are not called to, sending is a vital way to be involved with God’s work in the world.

If you spend a few moments talking with a missionary, you will soon hear them talking about how God has cared for them. That care has come through a variety of means, but frequently it has been through faithful senders. Needs were met when people prayed. Financial provision came through the generosity of God’s people, some known for a lifetime and some virtual strangers who God prompted at just the right time. Joy was bolstered when a letter or package came from home. Tremendous relief and blessing was felt when there was a place to stay and a car to drive and groceries in the cupboard in the midst of jetlag and the pressures of home assignment.

The love, encouragement and strength of senders carriers the workers who bring the gospel where it has never gone. Senders are vital.
