This year’s national conference saw a record number of attendants, with just over 240 guests pushing Naamaroo Conference Centre to full capacity. Visitors came from near and far, from all around Australia and internationally. We were also blessed by the support and attendance of many missionary parents and alumni members. All who came were eager to hear about and share in God’s work in East Asia. Our theme this year was One World, One Passion - and as stories were shared from the many different cultures and ministries our workers take part in, it was amazing to see the OMF fellowship stand in unity in prayer and praise.
Our guest speaker Marilyn Schlitt, the International Director for Member Development, shared with us the importance of spiritual refreshment. So often, we start with a great enthusiasm and passion for service to God, but unless we first seek out our relationship with our Father, we easily grow weary and lose heart. When our focus is first set to God and his abundant life and love, these blessings will naturally overfl ow to those we serve. As Paul reminds us, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11).
Our first news from the field was a session on the Philippines. Queensland OMF-ers Mark and Susan Chapman covered the topic: Celebrating unity in the midst of diversity. They spoke about working together to disciple the urban poor, help churches grow and bring people out of darkness into the light. We also had the opportunity to hear from our candidates preparing to go to the field. Currently there are 8 couples and 3 individuals ready to serve - and we were able to hear from almost all of them! They shared about their passion for the many different people groups of East Asia and how God had journeyed with them in preparing their hearts for service. We were able to support them as a family through prayer, and are keen to continue in prayer partnership as they step out in faith.
The weekend also had a variety of small interactive sessions, where we could ask questions and discuss different topics. Several returning missionaries from the field shared their wisdom covering topics such as - mission amongst diaspora, how your church can care for missionaries, working in Japan, and revealing Christ to the disadvantaged. It was great to learn from these experienced workers.
In all, the weekend was a great time to meet new people, catch up with old friends and finally put names to faces. Between sessions we were able to enjoy God’s beautiful creation in the Kuringai National Park as well as put our minds to the test in mission trivia. I know I was amazed to learn that soccer originated from China! So until next year, keep praying for the people of East Asia, and the workers God calls to do his work.
