Go Forth with Joy.....Journey of Faith

“You have served in Hong Kong for over 4 years?” “Yes, that was unbelievable!” I remembered when I first arrived to HK in the sweltering summer of 2004. It was hot (37°c) with humidity of 95%, people everywhere, the noise and pollution was unbelievable. I wondered how I was going to survive in such conditions for the next four years. I found the OMF Regional Office to be in the most confined area of HK with a population density greater than anywhere in the world – 130,000 per sq km!! It is known as the “red light” district with notorious activities happening day and night! I found myself struggling to get used to the confined living, the crowds and the differences of language and culture. However God in His Majestic and Sovereign way reminded me that His thoughts are not my thoughts and His ways are not my ways.

With the assurance of His words, I knew He had called me to this role at the Field Head office for a season as part of his His ultimate plan for my life. At the office I was responsible for field missionaries’ personnel matters, working with International and home side offices to prepare new candidates joining the Field, visiting and giving personal support to missionaries in the Field and also coordinating Annual Conference for Field colleagues. In this support role, there is an integrated partnership with frontline ministry. Working together we fulfill His Great Commission by faithfully completing the tasks He has entrusted each of us within His Body. In frontline ministries, we have colleagues serving as medical personnel, teachers, lecturers, seminary teachers and community health workers. We also have people working within community development, youth training, vocational training, AIDS programs, student ministry, agricultural development and many other areas at our 20 different locations.

I remember one typical visit to co-workers at their area of service. From the Head office I carried mail, books, food and other daily necessities which were not available from the local store. Some of these places where my co-workers served are very remote. The journey would take many hours of a bumpy bus ride to reach them, and in some places required over night bus rides to areas that are further inland. God in His divine way used those visits to encourage and support them, serve alongside and pray with them. As much as we rejoiced to hear the windows of opportunity to be His salt and light in the midst of these unreached people groups, we were also being stretched through the stress of phones lines being tapped, lack of freedom to worship with local new believers in certain areas, lack of fellowship with other believers due to geographical separation, cross cultural adjustments, language barriers and also the inconveniences due to lack of adequate dental or general health care. Colleagues who live in the city face other challenges as they struggle to contextualise His words where society has moved to postmodernisation with its focus on individualism, materialism and idol worship.

Four years have quickly gone by, the experience gained has broadened my perspective and my worldview. Abba Father has helped me to realize He is more concerned with who I am rather than what I have done. God has helped me to be willing to allow His Spirit to transform and renew me so that I could be His instrument and vessel worthy to be used by Him in order to bless others as He has richly blessed me.

On reflection, I am so grateful that our All Knowing God has taken these years to train and prepare me and used the years of my professional experience to serve Him in areas beyond my wildest dreams. How true when He said in His word “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has ever conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him” 1 Cor 2:9.Thank you for your faithful partnership in prayers, support and encouragement.
